Last year, my family visited Hong Kong several times and stayed at different hotels. Hong Kong offers a wide range of hotel prices, and many visitors choose to stay at Chung King Mansion due to its affordability. However, we found that the hostels in Chung King Mansion were more suitable for backpackers rather than families with kids or parents. In this post, I will share our experience at each hotel that we stayed in. We stayed at several hotels, mostly located in the Central & Western districts, and once near the airport. The average price per night for all the hotels mentioned in this post was HKD 900 – 1,000 per night.
Lantau Island
There are several hotels near the Hong Kong International Airport, and the Regala SkyCity Hotel is one of them. We opted to stay there for one night as we had a late-night flight, and it would have been exhausting for my parents to travel to the city.
Regala SkyCity Hotel
The hotel is situated close to Asia World-Expo and Hong Kong International Airport. When we arrived, there was a long queue at the reception with guests waiting to check-in. The hotel lobby is spacious and has two wings – the North and South wing. We were assigned the South Wing during the smooth check-in process. However, I did not like the narrow and crowded corridor, which made passing through difficult when other people with luggage were passing by. Moreover, the corridor had a lot of mirrors, making it a little confusing.
We booked the Garden View room, which is around 17 square meters and sleeps two guests. The hotel room has a split bathroom design, where the sink, toilet, and shower area are separated. Having a split bathroom design helped us manage our time better, especially in the morning.

The hotel has a SkyDeck area and a gym on the 12th floor. It provides guests with a place to exercise, given the hotel’s isolated location. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus service that goes to Tung Chung MTR Station and Hong Kong International Airport.
The hotel’s location is ideal for guests who have an early or late-night flight or want to attend events like concerts or conferences at the Asia World Expo. However, it may not be the best choice for sightseeing visitors as it is quite far from the city center. Moreover, I am a bit concerned about the narrow space in the corridor in the event of an emergency. I would prefer to stay near the city center, close to all the attractions.
Western District
The Western District is an interesting district with many heritage sites, old markets, and parks.
Best Western Plus Hong Kong
Compared to other hotels in Hong Kong, Best Western Plus is considered an old hotel. It started operating around 2005.
We booked the Executive Suite, which is quite spacious with 44 square meters and accommodates two guests. The room has two double beds and a large sofa in the living area. It is the biggest room I have booked in Hong Kong for under HKD 1,000 per night. In fact, it could easily fit 4-5 people. While I liked the spaciousness of the room, I found the lighting in the living area too dim. It could be improved as it gets quite dark during the night. I suggest bringing your own slippers as the ones provided by the hotel are paper-thin and slippery when wet. We did not experience any odor in the room, although some reviews have mentioned it.

The hotel’s location is great. It is surrounded by many restaurants and public transportation options, including an airport bus that stops just across the street. Since the hotel is located on Hong Kong Island, guests can take the tram to Central and Causeway Bay while enjoying the city scenery. The hotel also offers other amenities such as laundry service and a gymnasium, but we were unable to check out these facilities due to lack of time.
In my opinion, the size of the room is not the most important aspect of a hotel, as most of the time is spent exploring the city. However, if you are looking for a spacious room at a reasonable price, the Executive Suite at Best Western Plus is definitely a good deal.
Sheung Wan
The Sheung Wan district is a lively neighborhood in Hong Kong, with many heritage sites nearby, including Man Mo Temple and Tai Kwun. If you are staying in Sheung Wan, check out this walking guide.
The Mercer Central
The Mercer Central is a luxurious hotel and serviced apartment situated in Sheung Wan. When we were browsing through the hotel booking website, we came across a great discount offered by the hotel. From the outside, it appears to be a small hotel, so we didn’t expect a spacious room. We initially booked a Studio Executive but were upgraded to a one-bedroom executive during check-in. The room was well-furnished with a kitchenette, a microwave, a sofa, a Nespresso coffee machine, and complimentary Twinings tea bags.

The hotel’s location was perfect as it was situated on Jervois Street, with a lot of nearby restaurants. It was also conveniently located near the Sheung Wan MTR and tourist attractions. Although the airport bus was a bit far from the hotel, it was still accessible. Otherwise, you can book an airport transfer from Klook. You also have the option to walk to the nearest airport express shuttle bus station to Hong Kong Station.
iClub AMTD Sheung Wan
On another visit, we chose to stay at the iClub AMTD hotel in Sheung Wan. Note that there are two iClub hotels in Sheung Wan, which may be confusing for first-time visitors. The size of the room is standard for Hong Kong hotels. It can accommodate up to four guests and comes equipped with basic amenities. Although breakfast was included in our booking, the options were limited. It consisted of only three types of bread, coffee, tea, and juice. I would not recommend adding breakfast to your booking if it is not already included. Instead, consider having breakfast at a nearby café or cha chaan teng to save money.

The hotel is located in the Sheung Wan district, where you can find a variety of restaurants nearby. It’s also conveniently within walking distance of Sheung Wan MTR. However, if you’re taking the airport bus, be aware that it’s a bit far from the hotel. If you’re taking the Airport Express, you can take the free airport express shuttle bus to Hong Kong Station.
Conclusion
Please keep in mind that the reviews provided above are solely for reference purposes. Prior to booking a hotel, it is advisable to consider the location of the places you intend to visit. You should determine whether you prefer a hotel located within the city or outside of it. Additionally, it’s important to check the price of each hotel. Some of the reservations mentioned in the reviews were made during promotional periods when the hotel was offering a discount. I hope this post will assist you in finding a hotel that meets your budget and travel needs.
